Colombian Peso Surges 7.5% in July as Dollar Weakens and Central Bank Holds Rate
The Colombian peso appreciated by 7.5% against the US dollar in July, closing at 3,158.44 COP per dollar, driven by a weakening dollar, rising oil prices, and optimism about Colombia's new government. The central bank's unexpected decision to hold its benchmark interest rate at 12.00% further reinforced the currency's rally. Analysts from Bancolombia suggest the appreciation was primarily due to domestic dollar sales, and while the carry trade continues to attract interest, the central bank's new reserve-accumulation program could lead to a weaker peso in the coming weeks.
